Greece, a country steeped in history and surrounded by the sparkling waters of the Aegean Sea, is a treasure trove of destinations waiting to be explored. Among these, the island of Symi stands out as a gem of the Dodecanese, just a short boat ride away from Rhodes Island. Join me on a journey from Rhodes to Symi, a day trip filled with scenic beauty, vibrant colors, and a glimpse into the relaxed pace of Greek island life.
Setting Sail from Rhodes Town
My day began in Rhodes Town, where I boarded a boat bound for the picturesque island of Symi. The anticipation in the air was palpable as fellow travelers, and I prepared to embark on a day of exploration. The ride was a delight, with the Aegean’s turquoise waters stretching out as far as the eye could see.

Symi’s Harbor: A Vibrant Welcome
As we approached Symi’s main harbor, the first thing that struck me was the vibrant pastel hues of the neoclassical buildings that lined the waterfront. Symi’s harbor, also known as Gialos, exudes a sense of timeless charm. The tall, colorful houses seemed to cascade down the hillside like a waterfall of paint, creating a postcard-perfect scene that instantly captured my heart.

Exploring the Harbor Town of Symi
Once on land, I took a leisurely stroll through Symi’s charming harbor town. Shops offering local crafts, souvenirs, and the island’s famous sponges lined the narrow alleyways. I couldn’t resist picking up a few unique keepsakes to remind me of this unforgettable day.

Symi is famous for its delicious seafood. I enjoyed a delightful lunch at a waterside tavern. Freshly caught fish and seafood meze were served, accompanied by the island’s renowned Symiotiko wine. It was a feast for the senses.

Panormitis Monastery: A Spiritual Oasis
If the time allows, you can visit the Panormitis Monastery, dedicated to the Archangel Michael. The journey to the monastery offers breathtaking views of Symi’s coastline, with its rugged cliffs and secluded coves.
Free Time and Harbor Farewell
After visiting the monastery, you can wander through the quiet streets of Ano Symi, the island’s upper town, and discover hidden chapels and breathtaking vistas of the surrounding sea.
As the sun descended below the horizon, it was time to bid farewell to Symi. The return boat journey offered a perfect opportunity to reflect on the day’s adventures while savoring the gentle sea breeze and watching the island’s colorful buildings recede into the distance.
